The Church of England is Britain’s state church. It is happy to take seats in the legislature for its bishops, who have not won thses seats through democratic elections. It allows the state to interfere in its internal affairs.
A recent report has made yet clearer its attitude towards democratic government.
A paper submitted to its national assembly from a working group for the promotion of national unity includes the statements –
That the Church is “accountable to a higher power” and is “commissioned” by “Christ and not by parliament”.
That the separation of church and state is merelya “theological claim” that “other lords legitimately hold sway” over domains where “Christ’s reign does not extend”.
The Church should reject that democratic notion says the paper, and continue its political involvement’.
In truth in the UK at its best the people “hold sway”, not lords, and not any Christ.
The bishops might seem to believe that nowhere can their god be rejected, though the majority of Briton’s have rejected their disgraceful church.
