State Church Bishop Condemns “Money and Power”

The Bishop of Buckingham, a Church of England official, has criticised officials at his church’s St. Paul’s Cathedral for their attitude towards the “Occupy London” protesters who have camped outside. The Bishop asked in a blog “Do they have the stomach to engage in the real world at the crest of a tidal race between people, money and power, or are they just overgrown public* schoolboys playing indoor games in their own self-important Tourist Disneyland?”

The Bishop’s church has the egregious privilege of being Britain’s state church. It has billions of pounds in property and other investments, and appoints legislators to the House of Lords without the people having any say in it. However, none of his employer’s “money and power” seems to have held the bishop back as he pursued a career in the church.

* Public school is a term still used by some in Britain when referring to elite private schools.
