The Charity Commission has revealed that it is concerned about the relationship between Charles Windsor and the Prince’s Foundation for the Built Environment, a charity he sponsors.
According to the Guardian, the Commission “has now ordered the foundation to explain its trustee decision-making, the activities it undertakes to further its charitable purposes for the public benefit, and its relationship with” Windsor.
Republic, a group that advocates abolition of the British monarchy, has alleged that the foundation is used by the heir to head of state to lobby on behalf of his personal campaign against modern architecture. As a registered charity it is obliged to pursue the public good, not personal interests. According to Republic the foundation has admitted that its strategy must be approved by Windsor.
The foundation has denied wrong-doing. The last accounts filed with the Charity Commission show spending of £3.6m.
Under Britain’s unwritten constitution Mr. Windsor, who is known by the feudal title of Prince of Wales, has the right to become head of state on the death of this mother. While he waits to inherit this public office he is paid approximately £20m annually by the people of Britain.
