But Benefits from Religious Privilege at Home."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>British Prime Minister Theresa May has, as reported by the New York Times, \u201cscolded (US) Secretary of State John Kerry for his speech criticising Israel\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">May&#8217;s criticism was of Kerry&#8217;s comments on the \u201ccomposition of the democratically elected government of an ally\u201d rather than of his criticism of the policies of the government of Israel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">However, the British prime minister may find it difficult to criticise religious discrimination by the state of Israel. That is because as an Anglican she benefits from the religious discrimination that is enshrined in the unwritten British constitution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\">The Church of England is recognised as the state church of the UK and is allowed to appoint legislators to sit in the House of Lords. This puts Anglicans like May in an egregiously privileged position in the UK.
