Judges Stand With Legislators-for-Life Against Rights of People

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The legislators-for-life in the House of Lords may be able to veto democratic reform if government fears prove correct. These fears are based on comments by the Court of Appeal that the Parliament Act should not be used to make major constitutional changes. Since 1911 the Act has allowed the House of Commons to eventually override the unelected legislators when they vote against its proposals
If the supreme court (known as the Law Lords) agrees with the Court of Appeal the legislators-for-life would be able to block reform of their legislative chamber and safeguard the feudal privileges that allow them to interfere in the government of the country while being unaccountable to the people. The judges of the supreme court are also legislators and sit in the House of Lords.
