Opposition to Donald Trump’s state visit to Britain has been undermined by the pro-monarchy phrasing of the petition to Parliament.
The petition says that the proposed visit should be cancelled because “it would cause embarrassment to” queen Windsor.
That seems very unlikely as Britain’s hereditary head of state has entertained the likes of Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe and Nicolae Ceausescu of Romania.
It will instead be very many of the British people who make no nonsensical claim to “royal” status who will be affronted if the visit happens.
However, many may feel unable to sign a petition that expresses uncalled for concern for the sensibilities of an undemocratic head of state.
