Queen Not Untouchable Says Republic Leader

The BBC has broadcast a seven minute interview with Graham Smith, Chief Executive of Republic, the anti-monarchy group and MP Paul Flynn. This followed Republic’s campaign for fair treatment after years of anti-republican bias by the state broadcaster. It had accused the Corporation of “fawning” coverage of this year’s “jubilee” marking sixty years of feudal privilege.

Following the broadcast Windsor historian Hugo Vickers said that it was “unfair” to allow republicans to express their ideas without a monarchist being present to defend the feudal institution.

Graham Smith stressed that one interview was no substitute for overall impartiality. He added that “We don’t accept the idea the Queen is untouchable.
